Set aside an hour to spend with each of the doulas to find who you “click with”. Yes, there are some people who “give good interview”, but spend the time with the doula asking her questions. Do you find that she talks about herself most of the time or are you being listened to most of the time? Does she reassure you when answering your questions and any concerns you may have. Does she seem respectful of your wishes and goals?
Hint: If you know more than a few details about a doula’s own birth story or some random personal drama, it’s a red flag! The focus of your doula relationship should be on you, not the doula.
Hint: Does the doula show the capacity to bring the appropriate energy to your conversation, yet shift when needed. An experienced doula will be able to confidently change the focus as needed.
Also to help you further with your interview, we are providing you a downloadable set of suggested interview questions that may ask your doula. You can print the handout and have your doula fill it out or you may simply have it handy while discussing.
For more information or questions about how to select your doula, please feel free to contact us or send us a quick message if you have any queries.
