What is a Mothers Blessing?

Some pregnant women in our society hold a baby shower to celebrate their pregnancy.  In Native American culture, they celebrate the transition from maiden to motherhood with a ceremony known as a Blessingway.  It is a time when the mother to be is honoured and nurtured by her community of women.   A Mothers Blessing is inspired from the Native American Blessingway and the emphasis is on supporting, honouring and nurturing the mother to be.  As it is not a traditional baby shower, presents are not usually part of the celebration.  Instead, family and friends often provide more tangible support in the form of a roster of meals and assistance for the new mother and baby.

The Mothers Blessing can incorporate many different activities, including:
  • belly casting, painting and/or hennaing
  • making a birthing necklace with beads given by family & friends
  • birth story circle
  • pregnancy & birth poetry
  • birth art
  • massage
and much more. The activities are influenced by each mother to be.

A Mothers Blessing is not only a special time for the mother to be, but also for everyone involved as it encourages a sense of community and connectedness.
